SUGARCANE Industry: Electricity from sugar mills decreased, deficit increased

Electricity generated from sugarcane khoi was once said to be the main alternative source of Chinese region’s earnings. But in FY 2024, the total power of power in Uttar Pradesh in the total electricity generated from renewable energy declined to 41 percent. This is the lowest in the last six years.

According to data from the Central Electricity Authority, in FY 2024, sugar mills have generated about 292.35 crore units of electricity from Khoi. It had around 76 per cent stake in FY 2019. Since the financial year 2019, the total power generated through co -production in the state has fallen by 32.3 per cent.

The sugarcane is lost in the sugarcane and it is made steam by burning on the boiler, which produces electricity again. The electricity generated from khoi is considered a renewable source of energy. Out of a total of 122 sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, 44 have the facility of power generation from Khoi. Most of them are in private sector. In the last 10 to 15 years, Chinese companies have invested around Rs 7,000 to 8,000 crore for co-production. Chinese companies have a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW through co -production facilities. But they produce only 600 to 700 MW.

Sources said that the major reason for this decline is not to increase the price of power procurement from the Chinese companies by the government. According to industry top sources, Chinese companies used to supply electricity at the rate of Rs 5 per unit at Rs 5 per unit. But in the year 2019, the price was reduced to Rs 3.8 per unit.

Earlier, the government had fixed the electricity rate generated from co -production by assuming the price of Khoi on the basis of Rs 2,100 per quintal and when the rates were reduced, the price of Khoi was considered to be Rs 1,100 per quintal. A senior official of a sugar mill told the business standard that the government is trying to buy power at Rs 8 to 12 per unit from the open market but is not giving us five rupees.
