Electric Vehicles: Is the electric vehicle (EV) car to overtake petrol and diesel cars in India in 2025? According to a report by The Economic Times, 28 new vehicles are scheduled to be launched this year, out of which 18 will be electric. This is a big bounce from the 4-5 EV model launched every year in the last two years. In addition, the number of 11 and 15 new trains (both EV and internal combustion engines) launched in 2023 and 2024 will also cross the figure.

EV market boom

Analysts estimate that the major reason for the growth of the auto sector will be the increase in zero-emission vehicles. These vehicles will make half of the total sales by adding 2,00,000 units to the passenger vehicle market this year.

Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice-Pressurer and Sales and Marketing Head of Kia India, said that due to so many EV launch, customers’ interest can increase in it. He said that EV’s painting can increase from 2% to 4%.

Maruti Suzuki’s managing director Hisashi Takeuchi said in the report that all manufactures are focusing on expanding the electric vehicle market in India.

Attempt to remove customers’ anxiety

Maruti Suzuki is planning to set up a fast-charging station every 5-10 km in the top 100 cities before its first EV launch in the next financial year to remove customers’ concerns and buy more and more EVs.

Hyundai also expects a major expansion in India’s EV market. The company estimates that EV sales will increase from 2% in 2024 to 15-20% of the total market share by 2030.

Unsoo Kim, managing director of Hyundai Motor India, said that it would be a major increase in sales given the size of the Indian market. He said that attempts such as the government’s 5% GST rate and many OEMs offer new products will play a major role.

Hyundai has started assembleing the battery pack locally to maintain a competitive price. In addition, the company has partnered to take the battery cell from local suppliers for the upcoming EV. Hyundai is also working on installing 600 fast-chargers on the major highway of India by 2030.

Major EV launch in 2025

Tata Motors projected Sierra Ice in Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the first public display of the internal combination engine (ICE) version. This will be available with two engine options: 170 ps 1.5-liter petrol and 170 PS 2-liter diesel.

Maruti Suzuki launched its first electric SUV, E Vitara, at Bharat Auto Expo 2025. It will be available in the market by March 2025 and will come with two battery options for a 500 km range. It will have features like 10-way power driver seat, dual screen, seven airbags and panoramic sunroof.

Tata Motors introduced the production version of Harrier EV at Auto Expo 2025. It will have a single and dual-motor setup and will give a range of up to 500 km.

MG Motors launched its premium SUV Majestor at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. It is positioned above the Mg Gloster and will be available with a 2-liter diesel engine.

Byd performed electric SUV called Sealion 7 in Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. It has an 82.56 kwh battery, which gives a range of 567 km. It will be launched in India soon.

EV market future

According to the report, India’s EV market is expected to reach 9,32,000 units by 2030 to grow from a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 43%. Out of this, 61% demand will be of electric SUVs. EV sales in 2024 were only 1,07,000 units, while around 43 lakh cars (including sedans and SUVs) were sold across the country.
